On average, how much do you guys invest on education/workshop a year (including transportation & accommodation)?

An easy one - direct education 0. Paid for workshops 0. Trade shows and own research, too much. My experience as a lecturer in college made me far too aware how most training is carried out for profit, not to transfer knowledge and skills. There are some events from societies, unions and associations I belong to that I attend - but usually they are more networking than real training.


There are also more courses that are designed to be used to prove competence for something - when the reality is most people on the course already are trained, but just lack the bit of paper!

Averaged about $1,500 over the past four years. Don't know if that's a waste, given how many good resources there are online. Don't have a subscription to Lynda, by the way.


2013: $1,500 on a lighting workshop, and that was all on credit card, but felt I couldn't pass up the opportunity. Also purchased that DVD on frame rates they're selling elsewhere. Unlikely to spend any more this year. Also attended a workshop on Dedolights (the founder is doing a world tour to promote their new LEDs), but it was free, and transport costs were negligible. A few of the local rental companies here hold free workshops on this and that, usually in connection with product promotion -- eg the Panasonic 3D camera, when that came out a few years ago, etc.

2012: $700 (Rob Adams course, and another course on television production).

2011: Zero... apart from three-year subscription to ASC Magazine, and a couple of cinematography DVDs. I think I also purchased the DVDs on sound and lighting. And then probably half a dozen books on different aspects of filmmaking... Maybe not zero after all, come to think of it...

2010: Probably $2,500 (editing, animation, VFX courses).
