Offering/Making GIFs/Cinemagraphs?

I've let the idea tumble around in my head before, but I wonder how hard it would be to make a GIF/Cinemagraph either from footage stills, or, MORE likely, planning for one moment to shoot with stills in order to make the cinemagraph.

I had thought IF you could use this as your preview still on your videos, that would be dynamite.

Something like this person's work (JLBweddings)

anyone have any experience with this?

Isn't that just a subtle animated gif? I don't see how you could use it other than on a website.

Yes it is.

I was thinking of it's uses not in the actual video (except maybe the DVD menu) but rather the website. Especially if there was a way to make it the video preview pane.

Or simply promotional, like making a movie poster the B&G can put on Facebook.

It's pretty basic. You use sequential shots (e.g. frame grabs from your video) to make an animated .gif, and use that as a poster in your web video player. I'd suggest using Paint.net with the .agif plugin to create the .gif, and video.js as the player - all free and as good as commercial products. I do think the effect is cheesy and thus might not convey the image you want.
