Ubuntu PC into ATEM at 1080i?

Has anyone attempted to go directly from a PC or Laptop with Ubuntu installed to output something like VLC in 1080i into a Blackmagic ATEM for playout purposes?

We need Ubuntu since presenters may be bringing flash drives/hard drives and we need to play their files potentially in specific orders with VLC playing to a secondary display while the playlist on another screen being controllable. We were already thinking of loading a 10hr 1080p video loop on a different Raspberry Pi 2 with a 128GB flash drive and an Adafruit ROM for looping videos: https://learn.adafruit.com/raspberry...ooper/overview

The reason why I bring this up is I want to avoid using cross converters since we are on a very limited budget after our initial investment in a ATEM Production Studio 4K and the backbone surrounding that. Even EDID emulators are not worth it for such a small problem to solve.

Why Linux? Playback performance is better on lower end hardware (very helpful on laptops) and saves us malware troubles from other people's random USB sticks and HDDs.

Google results in no relevant results for this, so no one as attempted this. Ubuntu is a free OS, so I expected someone to do this, but apparently not.
