Email Scam

Just got a nice email scam. After several back and forth emails that seem a little off. I sent a quote for a date in August to be determined (she did not have a date, basically wanted me to pick it), at a location to be determined (the event planner is still working on securing the location, but it will be with in an hour of "my location" emailer said just that "my location" and in "my state" did not use the actual name of my town or of my state). After sending a quote and getting a response asking "did you include the event planners fees in that", to which I responded what are you talking about (clear this person is running the scam on multiple people and got mixed up that they had not asked me the following yet). They sent the following email:

" Thank you for the estimate. I want you to know that i am in the ICU just recuperating from an ear surgery i undergo. The event planner handling the event does not have the facility to receives credit card payment, i want you to do me a little favor. I want you to add their charges to yours so you can have everything run on my credit card. The favor is that after you ran everything on my credit card and the total amount has cleared to your account, you will send their fees to them cos they accept cash only. Here is the final breakdown below :

Your service fee
Event planner: $1650
Tips & Gratuity : $100

In view of this i want you to get back to me with the grand total and i will provide you with my credit card details to run through ASAP.

Thanks,
Mary "

Shoot Location/Venue: our favorite location for this gig is within your City, this is why we are in need of a good photographer withing the location. The project manager will secure a suitable arena near enough for the shoot, and once we secured the venue; 5 days before the shoot the location info/address will be emailed to you. Transportation will cost you less both for you and your escort if you are willing to come with an escort.

PAYMENT SECTION.
And about compensation; I purposely asked for your hourly rate, though we have our professional standard rate of $280 per hour as slated and endorsed for any hired photographer. An advanced deposit of $400.00 will be issued to you via a cashier's Check as designed by our policy. Hereafter, balance of $480 will be paid to you at the completion of the project.
Meanwhile, your assistance is highly needed as we have decided to entrust you with extra amount to cover the studio booking for the shoot. Actually, the check suppose to be written on the project manager's name but he's late and we're yet to find another responsible one...

Once I received a confirmation that the payment has been sent to you, complete Instructions will be emailed to you on how to process/send the studio payment. I shall send you the venue info and driving directions few days before the photo shoot. Please read through the payment section over again for proper clarification and understanding.

Just another variation of the Nigerian Prince Scam. <smh> I'm sure they'll get someone to fall for it.

Re: Email Scam

I got something similar to that but it was through text message! Since I've never had anyone text me to get a quote I figured something was up. I sent over my rates and this person picked a packaged and asked if I took credit card. I told them I did and then they went into the exact same line of " I'm in the ICU just recuperating from an ear surgery". I knew it was scam and just for fun I asked several more questions and got some very strange answers when I finally said we're not interested.

Re: Email Scam

This has been doing the rounds for many years! In fact in the old days before they asked for credit card info they offered me a bank check if I also paid the cake maker and offered a $1000 gratuity for my effort! Of course the baker's account was their one and the bank will dishonour the funds at a later date!

It's a numbers game and if you send out enough emails to budding photogs you will eventually find one sucker and I'm sure that found a few too (not me of course) It's still listed on our scam website run by the state government here and the number of scams goes into many pages!!

The website motto is " If it sounds too good to be true then it probably isn't"

Re: Email Scam

This was my email exchange from one of those scammers a month ago:
Mary,
Since you are hearing impaired, I’m hoping you sympathize with my own disability:
I actually don’t have any arms or hands. In fact, I am typing this email with my nose.
I take pictures with my feet. If you don’t mind that I will be at your family reunion
scooting around on my butt and using my feet to take pictures, I will be glad to attend.
I usually wear very loose shorts in the summer since I get hot moving around on the ground.
Sometimes guests complain they get more than they bargained for, but I need to be comfortable.
I would be glad to accept your credit card payment if you are willing to work with my disability.
Ian

Ian you inspire me.

This is a email exchange that I have currently going on. I love that he is willing to hire me despite the fact that I am blind and like him have horrible English. I also love that he was confused for a second when I answered questions he had not asked yet. Then was quickly convinced he must have already talked to me.
