I shoot a lot of dance events. I hate hiring a second camera. I don't like the insurance issues of a second shooter. I like to have one camera angle from center stage all the way in the back. I was thinking of buying a hd camera going full stage fixed and doing some croping for this angle in my NLE. Then using my standard dv camera for a side angle which I will run. I'm just wondering if anyone does this and does it work ok.

I don't do it, but I'm intrigued by the idea. I do a lot of dance videos and I rarely get the shots I want from a second camera person and this could be a solution.

Yes, this works very well. It is a great reason to buy an HD camera now. When you are producing a standard def project, can can bring in the shots from the second HD camera that was stationary. There is so much resolution on the HD picture that you can zoom and pan on those shots and still stay above the resolution of the SD project. It looks like the second camera was operated by a second shooter and gives you great flexiblity in editing.

I hadn't even consdiered the potential for built in pan & scan from native HD footage. That is a real bright idea.

Now if I only had a second camera I could make use of that idea. :-)

Oh and then I would need some new customers.
