Live switching and video monitoring?
 

My church is looking into purchasing a computer and software that will:

1. Have inputs of 2 cameras
2. Allow for live switching and monitoring of video from both cameras
3. Recording both audio and video into Video Vegas. Which will be edited later

I know that there are video packages where you buy the switcher, monitors, and recorders separate, but is there a program that is computer based where you can run everything from a central location.

The budget that the church has is around $3000.00 for this setup which includes the computer. The church already has Video Vegas 6, 2 Canon GL2s, and the computer is waiting to be ordered.

My main question is there software out there to do this or is it better to get the video pack deal.

I'm not sure if this is the type of software that will work for what you are wanting to do. But you can always download the trial version and see.

my only concern with software for switching is reliability. even good pc's freeze up easily and can cause headaches for live events.

Mark did make a good point about even really good computers can freeze.

You may want to take a really good look at going the hardware route. That's what I'm doing now as a matter of fact. I'm using 3 Sony VX2100's and running them into a Panasonic MX30 via composite and S-video. I just started doing this so I am not an authority on it yet. Right now, I'm running audio from the cameras into the MX30 via composite cables, but that soon will be changing. I'm planning to get a Yamaha MW10 or something similar then feed audio into that. I'm still looking around for some DVD recorder options so I can record everything right into there and be done. I also plan to feed some VCR's for folks who want VHS instead of DVD.

Jeff and Mark,

Do you have some recommendations on a Video Package Setup to include the DVD Recorder, Switcher, and other associated equipment. I did think about what would happen if the computer were to freeze and how much of a "pain" that would be. Thanks for confirming my questions.
