8 bit gamma 2.222 vs. 32 bit gamma 2.222 rendering

HDV clips rendered with setting 32 bit gamma 2.222 are significantly darker compared to renders with setting 8 bit gamma 2.222.
Why is that? Shouldn't they be quite identical in terms of luminance?
