rendering SD to 1024
 

Hey, I should know this but I dont so I am asking.....I shoot eng documentary pieces for mission teams in Africa and Haiti with a GL2 and am pretty happy with the outcome. All projects go to DVD via DVD Archiect. Two questions:

1. Will I gain any quality by rendering final projects to the hdv setting?

2. Is there a noticeable movement towards "film look" by rendering to 24p?

1. No. Detail to support an HD resolution just isn't there, plus you're adding another stage of lossy MPEG2 compression. I've not actually tested what you're suggesting, but I think you'll reduce quality due to compression artifacts, and there is no rez to be gained.

2. Lots of people love the motion look of 24p. I don't happen to be one of them, but if you like the look you should try using it on different types of material. Typically pans need to be slower or they'll show some undesired motion glitches.

One hidden benefit of 24p is that if you're outputting true 24p (not 24p embedded in 60i) you can get more quality out of your MPEG render for DVD (20% fewer frames). Or, you can use those bits to get 20% more content on the DVD at the same compression.

See also this post for info on why you should be working at 23.976, not really 24. DVDA will reencode a true 24p, but likes 23.976, which meets the DVD standard.
