editing on external drive

I've just recorded a 4 camera, 1.5 hour wedding, which also used 6 audio sources.

Up till now I've edited such events in Vegas on one of two internal 400gb sata drives...both of which are now full, at least don't have enough space for the files from this wedding.

All the files are now on an external 500gb usb2/firewire400 drive.

Have anyone of you edited events such as this with the files on an external as opposed to on an internal drive? Just wondered how you have found it.

It would nice to do it all on the drive they are presently on so I don't have to move stuff around.

there is no problem using your external drive. Can be very useful when working on different systems.

I wouldn't go with usb though,to slow for editing,go for firewire or better still get an esata card for your pc,ie, a card that plugs into your pci or pci-e socket on your motherboard which will then give you an esata socket on the back of your pc.You can then plug the hard drive into that socket, which will be the same as using an internl drive.

Works for me

I edit church each week from a firestore with no problem. It is on standard firewire. I don't see any problem speedwise. I am using Version 8.0a.

I edit via usb, especially using my icydock enclosures. Very helpful when you have 20 hard drives to swap in and out.

Let's clarify things a little bit:

Editing using hard drives connected via USB is just fine.

"Capturing" should not be done via USB - you should use firewire for that.

It seems different posts in this thread are referencing each of the above and the two are getting confused.

Thanks guys. Your thoughts are much appreciated. I captured two cameras via firewire to HDD's, so got that right! :-)

Are you using Vegas pro 8 ? If so then 8.0b has been released.
