1920x1080 Output Possible?
Is there a reason when choosing WMV HD as an output (or various other formats) that 1920x1080 isn't available? It seems like 1440x1080 is the highest I can go.

1440 x 1080 is the pixel dimension of the video frame. Tagged as widescreen 16:9, it will be displayed with the correct aspect ratio (i.e., effectively 1920 x 1080).
HDV uses 1440 x 1080, for example. |
Different codecs have different artificial limits in Vegas. You can render 1920x1080 uncompressed AVIs , but you'll need a RAID if you want to play it back in real time (4 drives for i, 8 drives for p).

I was just referring to WMV HD as an example. So is AVCHD 1920x1080 equivalent to HDV 1440x1080 then? I know the Canon HG10 recorded at 1440x1080 but the new HF100 records at 1920x1080. I'm a little confused.

Stephen,
Some cameras allow for a 1920 x 1080 image to be recorded, others allow for a 1440 x 1080 image to be recorded. The difference is that the 1440 image uses a PAR (Pixel Aspect Ratio) of 1.333, meaning the pixel is rectangular. This saves about 25% in space, so it generally means the bitrate can be higher from the camera. The 1920 image is a 1.0 or square pixel, and because it's square/covers less surface, is a larger file at identical bitrates to a 1440 image. Both 1440 and 1920 have their advantages. Visually, they're about the same due to the high compression of AVCHD. Some folks really get caught up in the math of it, but it's not worth worrying too much whether the camera is recording 1440 or 1920 at low bitrates, and it's even a little less of an issue if the NLE is outputting 1440 vs 1920.
