RED Workflow with Vegas 7
 

As some of you many know, the very first opencut.org competition is going on right now with a short film called "Susannah".

Excerpt from website:

- This project is a short subject directed by Evan Nicholas and executive produced by Joe Carnahan and Torrey Loomis.
- Filmed in 4k 2:1 on RED ONE Digital Cinema camera #21 (Calvin)
- Shot on location in the Salton Sea area of southern California December 14-16, 2007.


Anyways, a friend and I entered this contest together, I'm going to be receiving the footage to edit within the next few days, and that is where the problem comes in.

Vegas can't handle .R3D files, and RedCine is buggy (at best) on a PC.

So my solution here is going to be to edit together the QT proxies that RED generates of each shot.

Is it going to work? I dunno. I'll post updates and possibly screenshots as we go through this process.

Does anyone have any suggestions so as to be able to edit with the actual 2k footage?

What about transcoding everything to a format that Vegas would handle?

e.g. quicktime photoJPEG (not prores because that's not on PC)
AVI Cineform (but you need that encoder??)
Avid DNxHD - ?

How would I go about the transcoding?

(I'd love to have 2k Cineform AVIs, but that's not coming for a few months).

Can Vegas handle the DNxHD codec?

Vegas will read the DNxHD codec... though it might be pretty slow. (So I probably should not have suggested that.)

Red Alert?

To the best of my knowledge, Red Alert works only on Mac.

I'm PC.

Why not download the RedCine software, then and convert to one of the formats it supports:

But doesn't the contest you're participating in require that you use a Mac to edit? Under project requirements:

Although this wouldn't make the project very "open source"...

Torrey Loomis, the OpenCut project director stated on Stu Maschwitz's Blog (http://prolost.blogspot.com/2008/05/...-winhouse.html) that , "We've included an Ubernote to the resources section denoting that this project is NOT limited to Mac.

Second, we've changed the upload requirements to h.264 720p or 1080p. ProRes is not required.

This project is open to anyone--PC or Mac, period."

And I have Dl'd RedCine and have worked with it, it just will not output to 1080p QTs. All I get is one frame of pink gooey mess. I think it may be my ATI graphics card, not sure.

So apparently REDCODE only currently works on a Mac.

Anyone know when there will be support for Windows users?

I am in the middle of the edit right now. What I have done is

Organize the clips in Red Cine library, selecting the best takes into a rough sequence and outputting that to 1280 x 720p TIFF sequence. Bring this sequence into Vegas and match up the audio and you are on your way.

Just remember that Vegas uses Quicktime to read TIFF files which can slow down the process tremendously. You may be better off looking at a PNG (or some other format) sequence instead.

The only problem with RedCine (for me) is that all it outputs is a pink/green freeze frame. With any output option.

It sucks.
