Vegas Pro 8 -> DVDA 5: HDV contact is not possible without recompression?
 

I use:
1. HDV 1080-50i video from Canon HV20.

2. Vegas Pro 8b: Project HDV 1080-50i (1440x1080; 25,000 fps).

3. DVD Architect Pro 5 Project Properties:
- Disc Format: Blu-ray Disc
- Video format: MPEG-2
- Bit rate (Mbps): 25,000
- Aspect ratio: 16x9
- Resolution: 1440x1080
- Frame rate: 25,000 interlaced

My goal was to make Blu-ray disc without recompression of HDV source video. Alas, not succeeded.

Variant 1.
VEGAS: Render As "Main Concept MPEG-2" - "Blu-ray 1440x1080-50i, 25 Mbps video stream".
Note: Custom => Video: Output type - MPEG-2; Level - High (both is not changed).
Result: Rendering with recompression (Sadly)


DVDA5: Make Blu-ray Disc => Prepare => "Review Message List" is empty (No messages to display)
Result: Preparing without recompression (OK!)

Variant 2 (Change in Vegas "Output type" to "HDV" ).
VEGAS: Render As "Main Concept MPEG-2" - "Blu-ray 1440x1080-50i, 25 Mbps video stream".
Note: Custom => Video: Output type - HDV; Level - High1440 (both is changed).
Result: Rendering without recompression (OK!) (No Recompression Required)

DVDA5: Make Blu-ray Disc => Prepare => "Review Message List" now is not empty: The video 'xxxxxx.m2v on track 2 'Video' 'Name xxxxxx' will be recompressed.
Result: Preparing with recompression (Sadly)

Conclusions:
- There is no way to make Blu-ray MPEG-2 disc without recompression (either in Vegas, or in DVDA5) of HDV source video.
- DVDA5 is not likes MPEG-2 .m2v-files with "Level" := "High 1440".

Questions:
- Is this a restriction of Blu-Ray MPEG-2 standard on "Level" = "High 1440" ?
- Is this a restriction of DVDA5 ?
- Is it possible to remove "High 1440" MPEG-2 restriction in next DVDA 5a ? (It will be great for all HDV camcorder owners !)

HDV is not a valid format for Blu-Ray discs. So it must be re-encoded to either Mpeg2, Mpeg4, or VC-1.

There is no way around this no matter what software you are using.

sony avc will work

But if the source is HDV it would still need recompression.

Not good news for HDV camcorder owners, of course.

Why not? This doesn't affect them any differently than anyone else. Doesn't matter if you shoot DV, HDV, XDCAM, DVCProHD, or anything else. It ALL has to be recompressed for BluRay just as it had to be recompressed for DVD.

ALL in one boat.

I had a little hope for HDV.
Because both HDV and Blu-ray supports MPEG-2 Main Profile. The only difference: Blu-ray supports "High level" (resolution up to 1920x1080), HDV - "High 1440 level" (up to 1440x1080).


What if the real difference - only 1 bit in Blu-ray MPEG-2 Header.
Just as my stupid assumption...
