All Sony Products Crash

I'm a Vegas 8b user and it worked fine until last week. I've edited a large amount of video shot in the alps and have produced one render from Vegas - but for some unkown reason the program now crashes on a regular basis, both when I'm editing and aslo when I'm trying to render.

I've downloaded the trial version of Movie Studio 9 and have exactly the same problem when trying to render.

I shoot in AVCHD - from a Panasonic SD5 and have also included some MP4 files from a buddy who was out in the Alps with me. Prior to this edit the program worked fine.

I also have DVD Architect Pro 4.5 and this works fine (well, it did the other day).

There are no error messages or anything like that - the program just stops working. I am using Vista as the OS and the program is not running in XP mode.

I think I may have solved the problem - it might be still JPEG images. I've deleted them from the timeline and inserted some more video and the thing is now still rendering.

It's a shame as my still images are not too bad - http://lawman-trg.co.uk/modules.php?...view_album.php

I've run into the same problem, although I was using Tif images. Some one on this forum told me try converting my images to .png fles. I did, and all was well.

Its easy; just open your image in Photoshop and then choose "save as", and select the .png extension. Good Luck - PK

It may also be that the JPG images were TOO BIG. You might try reducing the resolution of the images.

No matter what format your images are in, Vegas will have to fully decompress them into RAM to use them on the timeline. If you have a lot of very large images, this can eat up a LOT of RAM. When Vegas runs out of physical RAM it will have to start using the pagefile for extra memory, this will bring Vegas to an absolute crawl. It will appear to have locked up or seem to crash without an error message, but it hasn't actually crashed. (Although, it might as well have as you can't get any work done while this out-of-RAM condition exists.)

You can use Task Manager to see how much RAM is being used. If this is indeed what's happening, reducing the images dimensions probably the best solution. In other instances, however, reducing the amount of RAM set aside for the RAM preview in Vegas might free up enough RAM to avoid the use of the pagefile. This problem will likely disappear with the upcoming 64bit version of Vegas running under Vista64 with a boatload of RAM.

If you don't have Photoshop you can use the free Irfanview

Sometimes these programs can be really sensitive to compressed files.

MP3s should be avoided as well, convert any audio to WAV first.

I have got it figured - it's not the stills, it's either the MP4 or a couple of AVI clips. I've converted all of those now to MPEG and the thing works fine.

MP3's seem to be OK and my files are not too big JPEG's, I'm very well aware that TIFF's are large - they are what I save my RAW images too - most are over 16 or 17mb.

Fingers crossed that the stuff will now burn to DVD.
