HD Clips from new Nikon d90 not visible in Vegas?

Hello
Todya i got my hands on new Nikon d90 a digital slr with dh video capabilities, interchangable lenses, shallow DOF. Basically a dream come true for every film-look maniac.

I tried to edit some of the clips i made in Sony Vegas 7 and 8 but when i drag it onto playlist all i can see is a audio tracks and red color on video track.
Why is that? What i should do to be able to edit it? The file is not heavy/big since it plays smoothly in my VLC player.
I hope i dont need some kind of special codec which im aware is very complicated to install and use?

Please help, im excited about this camera and i would love to play with the clips ASAP!

Hi,

I went to the http://chsvimg.nikon.com/products/im...df/d90_16p.pdf instead. It is a Motion JPEG CODEC. You must not have Vegas Pro 8, as I understand that M-JPEG is included in Vegas8 (I don't use it and can't attest to it).

You could download a demo copy and have a go at it.

My best.

If it's MJPEG, Vegas 8 should handle it fine - earlier versions will not without downloading and installing an MJPEG codec. However, you need to confirm that it is.

If it's showing red frames in Vegas 8, it could be that Vegas thinks the file is corrupted. You might try using something like VirtualDub to convert it to a format Vegas can more easily read.

I tried a D90 clip from the web in Vegas Pro 8.0b. I didn't get any video at all on the timeline. I was able to open the clip in After Effects CS3, but the framing was all messed up. I had complete success with Premiere CS3.

Then again, I don't know if the clip was uncorrupted. Don't count this as the final word.

I tried to open the AVI files from the web as well but only audio was available in Vegas 8.0b. Perhaps there is something about the 720p size of the D90's files? The MJPEG AVI files from my Canon SD750 (640x480) have no trouble showing video. Both will playback in WMP and Media Player Classic without problems.

Has anyone successfully loaded a D90 AVI to Vegas?

Hi Mike. I just downloaded a sample AVI to try with vegas 8.0b, and I got the same results as you (only audio).

And I can play the clips fine in WMP so iit appears to be a Vegas thing.

I tried Windows Movie Maker 2 and it was able to open the video. This would be sad if the D90 AVIs need transcoding to use.

I found a sample MJPEG from a Canon TX1. The main difference between the Nikon and Canon made files: AVI 1.0 vs OpenDML (aka AVI 2.0). Secondary differences are the framerate (24 vs 30 fps) and Audio (11 Khz vs 44 Khz)

Near as I can tell the older standard is VfW while the second is DirectShow. Which I find strange as I'd think Vegas would be more comfortable with the older standard unless it wasn't made for the kind of content its storing now.
