Blurring stuff out in vegas 4.0....

Hey, I remember I had a site bookmarked, but I lost it, that had a bunch of "veggies" on it, and one of them had the capability to blur (censor) stuff out, and I need that! If anyone knows what that site is, that would rock, thanks.

Edward Troxel August 19th, 2003 01:31 PM

Was it http://www.sundancemediagroup.com/help/kb/kb_files.asp?

There's LOTS of veggies at the Sundance Media Group site.

Alex Knappenberger August 19th, 2003 02:31 PM

Yup, thats it, thanks Edward.

EDIT - Well yeah, that is the site as I remember it, but the file that I am looking for doesn't seem to be on there anymore, argh...

Glen Elliott August 19th, 2003 02:48 PM

Alex, do you not know how to do that effect or did you just want the veggie to make it easier?

Alex Knappenberger August 19th, 2003 02:51 PM

Sadly, I just don't know how to do it all together. :D

I can like cover the stuff up with white and keyframe it easally, but I want it blurred...

Edward Troxel August 19th, 2003 02:55 PM

The answer is:

Place the video on TWO tracks. On the top track, add a cookie cutter and blur effect. Use the cookie cutter to cut all BUT the selected area.

Alternately, blur the second track and add a cookie cutter to the top track with the option to cut the selected area.

Alex Knappenberger August 19th, 2003 03:02 PM

Duh, heh, that was easy. I should of been able to figure that out myself.

Thanks.

Isn't it great that all things are keyframeable in Vegas. I did it using my knowledge of how to do it in Premiere. Works great- plus you can blur the edges of the cookie cutter to give it a softer gradation on the edge of the mask.

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead, but I am looking to expand this technique. I need the blur to follow the face of a moving subject.

Glenn Chan December 27th, 2004 08:32 PM

Use keyframes on the cookie cutter or (Vegas5) bezier masking tool to follow your subject.

In the bottom, look for the sync cursor to timeline button (bottom left). You probably want it on. Then move the playhead a few frames forward and keep adjusting your mask. Vegas should add a keyframe automatically when you do this.

To save time, you can only add keyframes (or make adjustments) at the start and stop point of movement. If that makes any sense to you...

I'm running vegas 5.......where is the bezier?

On a related note, I started experimenting with somethign else. I remember seeing a tutorial once for premiere on making a scene black and white, but keying up a certain color so that it is the only visible color in the scene. I have mased the person off and converted the area outside the mask to B+W, how would I make a cerain color be the only visible color in the mask area, the rest going gray scale?

Edward Troxel December 27th, 2004 09:37 PM

Kevin, the Bezier tool is in Pan/Crop.

As for the mask following something, that is fully covered in the article I referenced above in my newsletter. As was mentioned, you just need to add keyframes so the blurred area follows what you want blurred.

As for the color pass, see the most recent issue of the newsletter (vol 2, #10) for a way to pass multiple colors which also references a previous article and tells how to do a single color more simply.

I'll check the latest newsletter Edward, thanks. The link above seems to be dead now though.

The link should be fine. I've been there this morning and was there last night. The full url is http://www.jetdv.com/vegas

I can't work out how to find the keyframe controller for the Cookie Cutter effect... I can only get a keyframe controller up for the Event Pan/Crop
