discrepancy audio sync orig and Vegas

Can someone explain why I find a on a couple of long M2T files with interviews between 1 and 1.8Gb, if I view them in VLC the sync is perfect, if I preview it in the Vegas explorer/trimmer or timeline the sync is lost, this is with the 'import at project tempo' selected, audio set to 25 SMPTE etc for PAL, how can this be possible, what causes the shift within Vegas, is there a setting I'm missing?
I don't think I had this problem prior to 8.0c, maybe another bug?

thanks

Import at Project Tempo stretches the audio to match the tempo set in the project properties. This is normally 120 beats per minute. Unless these are music files that you want to sync images or loops to, I would keep this setting off. This is probably what's causing the sync problem.
