Render time differences Vegas 8.1 vs. 8.0c

I recently upgraded to Vista 64. I have been doing some render tests with various codecs to determine if there are any differences between 8.0c and 8.1. Everything in the NLE's was set to be as equal as possible (even down to the screen set-up) Interestingly enough the two codecs that I render to the most AVC and Mpeg2 have shown significant differences render times between the two NLE's when both are run in a 64bit environment. I Rendered a one minute clip using both the default Sony widescreen 24p DVDA compatible Mpeg2 template and the AVC Blu-ray 1080i 29.976 16Mbps template.

Here are the results I had:

Vegas 8.0c

AVC HD 5m 16s
Mpeg2 0m 36s

Vegas 8.1

AVC HD 3m 25s
Mpeg2 0m 40s

In 8.1 AVC HD renders significantly faster, but 8.0c renders faster for Mpeg2. I am going to continue testing different codecs to see if there are any more differences. If any of the more knowledgeable computer techies on the board could give me answer why this happens it would be greatly appreciated.

Vegas 8 And 9 Rendering Issues

You sound like someone who could help.

I have a Dell Computer with an Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 @ 2.33 GHz processor, an 8 GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 3450 graphics/video card, and still get very long rendering times for Canon's HF 10 AVCHD footage and Sony's EX 1 mxf files.

Average time to render either the AVCHD or mxf file into a WMV 1920 1080 60i 59 FPS 8 MBPS video is over an hour for about 2 minutes of footage... or Vegas 8 and 9 will just crash halfway through.

I'm at a loss for what to do... Does my system just not have the proper specs to be able to handle rendering/editing footage in 1920 1080 resolution? Is it the programs fault?

Thanks for any help you can give me!

What operating system?

Have you edited the video? Added any effects?

And Mark is talking about Vegas Pro speeds, not sure about Vegas Movie Studio.

I've done my own testing between Vegas 8.0c and 8.1, and my results show 8.1 faster for everything, but my computer is slower than both of yours.

Chris Crocker February 24th, 2009 02:23 AM

"What operating system?"

Vista 64bit

"Have you edited the video? Added any effects?"

Small edits, some brightness/contrast changes on some. No editing of any kind on other attempts.

"And Mark is talking about Vegas Pro speeds, not sure about Vegas Movie Studio."

I'm using Vegas Pro 8 and 9... having the same problems on both.

I've done my own testing between Vegas 8.0c and 8.1, and my results show 8.1 faster for everything, but my computer is slower than both of yours.

Vegas Pro 9 does not exist at this time!

The only version 9 versions are the Movie Studio versions.

I suspect both of what he has are VMS. Should still work though. Something else is wrong.

Edward Troxel February 24th, 2009 08:57 AM

Over an hour for 2 minutes of footage means something is definitely wrong somewhere. Hard to say if it's related to Vegas or related to hardware or related to OS/drivers/etc... though. From the specs, the hardware is plenty fast enough for much better results than that.

Perrone Ford February 24th, 2009 09:09 AM

Agreed. My core2duo laptop gives better results than that. Especially in 64-bit.

Chris Crocker February 26th, 2009 07:17 PM

I'm thinking it's gotta be the software because I've installed the same files of Vegas Pro version 8.0b and Vegas Studio 9 on two different computers with the same results. Both will either stall or crash when rendering over a minute of 1920 1080 footage using many different WMV format settings.

Now if I render to an AVI uncompressed setting the speed is much faster, of course that leaves me with about a 20 GB file for only a minute of footage haha... ugh.

Edward Troxel
If it is a hardware or drive problem how can I find that out/test it? I'm not a total retard on the computer but I am a novice with this whole editing/rendering stuff.

Thanks for all the comments and anymore help guys!

Chris,

At this VERY moment, I am rendering a 1080p 10 Mbps WMV file just to test for you. Source was 1080p footage from an HMC150. I am rendering with Vegas 8.1 on my core2duo laptop with 4MB RAM.

Render is about 1/3 done and total time looks to be about 10 minutes for 1:06 footage.

I can test some footage from my EX1 when I'm done if you want comparisons. I can put the source footage as well as the rendered WMV on my FTP server for you to download if you like.

Thanks very much for testing. It makes me feel a little less crazy and stupid. I've now tried Vegas Pro build a b and c with the same crappy results on my 8 GB and 2 GB computers.
I knew I should've bought a mac pro!
The only thing that's really lacking on my main comp is a video drive which is an ATI Radeon HD 3450, so beyond that (if it even matters), I'm at a loss.
I'm actually getting slow render times using Pinnacle Ultimate 12... so it's gotta be something with my system, but what? How does one find that out? It's not as if these programs tell you what to expect in conjunction with your specs.
Ugh!

Thanks again for the help.

PS
Just did a render test for 1:08 of 1920 1080 Canon HF10 footage (doesn't really matter the source same previous speed results apply to my EX1 files) and it didn't crash (i think anything over 2 mins is what does it). My render time was 20 mins. I'm wondering if a service pack, or just a fully system restore/format might help?

Perrone Ford February 27th, 2009 06:59 AM

Are you running Vista64 on both systems? I am running XP64 for a reason. Hae you run any system benchmarking tools? That might help locate the bottleneck.

Try Crystalmark2004R3. It's free and pretty decent. We can compare results. You system should spank mine.

Edward Troxel February 27th, 2009 07:54 AM

For the HD 1920x1080 AVCHD 2 hour project I just finished, I selected 1 minute on the timeline. The entire segment was color corrected with New Blue Color Fixer plus. To render that 1 minute to 1440x1080 10M WMV took 15 seconds. I started with the 8M preset, changed the 8 to 10 and made sure the quality was set to "Best".

Chris Crocker February 28th, 2009 02:37 AM

Perrone

These are the Crystal Mark test results for my 8 GB ram Dell computer... and I have no idea what they mean or if I even did them right.

Edward

Regarding your fast rendering times; what are your computer's specs? It just took me 16 minutes to render a minute of AVCHD footage to a 1920 1080 59 Fps WMV file. I do the same thing as you in switching the standard 8 Mbps to 10. I also change the preset video bit rate from a Quality VBR to CBR, and choose best quality.

I'm getting slow rendering times in Pinnacle Studio 12 Ultimate, so I'm begining to think I have a hardware problem. Hopefully that test lists enough about my specs for any of you to tell if they're lacking.

If anyone here can give me their exact render settings for an mts or mxf or any AVCHD footage into a 1920 1080 WMV V9 file I will try and copy the exact process, and we can compare speeds.

Sorry guys for having like 10 more questions for every answer, and I really do appreicate the help.
