I'm desperate, does Vegas export smoothly into Premiere
 

I've got this HD project that I want to burn to Blu-ray, but Vegas has continually crashed on every render attempt. Now I'm wondering if I should turn to Premiere or another NLE to finish this project. Has anyone tried this approach?

I assume I need to export as an AAF, correct?

your under the Vegas curse. I'm currently looking to buy another NLE. I love the way Vegas works, but this one aspect makes it impossible to work with professionally.

Current work around are reduce you preview Ram to nothing, and render threads to 1. Fix your page file on another drive than that which Vegas is on, and it's size. But I've found this helps little if any. The other option is to render chunks, and then recombine the chunks later into one project and render from that.

Curious as to whether your using quad core, I had a Dual Core 3Ghz machine before, and I never had these problems. And I mean Dual Core, not Core 2 Duo. Maybe there's some type of problem with multicores? Yet people with Quads on this forum still have no problems so I'm just punching at clouds here :-(

Paul, try two things. Go into the preferences and:

1. Drop the number of threads Vegas will use. (Maybe even down to 1)
2. Lower the amount of RAM set aside for preview (a small number like 16)

Then see if it will render.

I am using a Quad Core, and haven't tried reducing threads, although I have tried many other things. One idea was to render track 1-3, then 4-8 to create a 2-video track project, but when I render out to AVI, I lose alpha channel. I've tried all versions of alpha channel, but it's not there.

I'm now trying a Print to Tape (HDV), which I'll then try to capture and render to Blu-ray.

To keep the alpha channel, you go to uncompressed AVI, go to the options, and then make sure the "Alpha Channel" box is checked. Try reducing the threads first, though.

Im running Vegas pro 8.1, on Vista 64 with 8 gigabyte of ram, on a
Intel quad core extreme 3.0ghz x9650 cpu.

burned a few blu-ray discs, no issues with vegas at all so far.

Joe, have you tried 32-bit? That's where I'm having a problem. When I use 8-bit, everything comes out very contrasty.

I am running a dual boot setup running xp pro 32 and vista 64 I've installed vegas 8 on both but I have only used it vegas in vista, maybe when i have a chance I can try it. I'm using dual boot for those apps that don't work on vista 64

open a 8.0c project into Vegas 8.1,

that could save some pain?

Why not just frameserve your Vegas timeline straight into Premiere with Debugmode Frameserver?

I certainly do not want to disparage Vegas, but on the other hand I've been playing with Premier.

Premier Pro is certainly a nightmare for me with ridiculous ways of doing simple things we take for granted in Vegas. I'm finding it very hard to learn.

Conversely Premier Pro seems to perform much better from the timeline. Preview seems to me to far superior. The why doesn't matter, it just does. You can render directly to Flash which is also worth something.

Encore will allow you to upload an interactive DVD to the web, and the templates available for Encore are pretty nice.

Overall it appears to me that Premier is an outstanding program, though not user friendly.

I say if you can learn Premier and don't mind spending up to twice as long doing things, go for it. Who would blame you?

Dugi, I may look into that. I never understood what Frameserving is.

Jeff, I love Vegas, it made me an editor. I'm just frsutrated that I can't get what I edited off the timeline. I only want to use Premiere as a rendering engine.

I did Edward. Thanks, but it crashed too. I moved the page file, set to 1 core and preview to 12. Boom!

Does 8.1 have the same issue? I may try loading it to Vista 64.

If you used any 3rd party effects, odds are they won't work in 8.1. Otherwise it doesn't hurt to try.
