Now that the Museum of the American Indian has had its grand opening, I'm free to release two pieces recorded for the American Indian Veterans that opened part of the museum this evening.
This is a rendition of America the Beautiful on a cane flute made by Hawk Littlejohn, a Native veteran flutemaker.
Anyway, it's part of the museum display, but of course the song is public domain. I'd like people to be able to use it if they'd like to.
I'm pretty proud to be a very small part of the museum, both as a musician and video editor/videographer. It's a great thing that we finally have a beautiful facility and recognition of our culture and it's contributions.

Outstanding and important location for the museum, but this also begs the question why such a facility did not previously exist.

I hope to make a visit there next year.

Since this isn't the place for politics, I'll not go there. But the museum is fabulous, is the first one of its kind in any culture, and will stand for a long time.
On the subject of Vegas, many of the kiosk media pieces were done in Vegas. Some of the overhead video when you enter the facility was edited/created in Vegas.

Although not being American, the song itself doesn't do anything for me, the music itself is hauntingly beautiful. Love that flute. If you put up any other pieces of music, please let us know!

If the song is used in a video, etc., how should the credit be stated?

BTW, the museum opening got a lot of coverage on local DC stations. A new museum in DC is always crowded initially. Hope to see it soon.

C'mon now Dylan. Canada IS in the continent of North America and I am sure you can find some purple mountain majesties or amber waves of grain up there as well (grin).

Congratulations on both counts! The music is *very* moving and bittersweet - especially given the history of The People and European colonists.

you might want to consider using one of the Creative Commons licenses when releasing your work to the public domain. This will allow you to have a clear definition of how your works should be used.

IMO current copyright laws have overextended timelines and are more about guaranteeing corporate profits than support artists and creativity so I am considering releasing my work back to the public domain after I have received a reciprocal reward for creating it (sometimes seeing people enjoy my creations is good enough).

"With a Creative Commons license, you keep your copyright but allow people to copy and distribute your work provided they give you credit -- and only on the conditions you specify here. If you want to offer your work with no conditions, choose the public domain."

It's definitely haunting and beautiful. It seemed almost tragically ironic too, considering the fate of the many native american nations. Perhaps bittersweet is the word. Thank you for sharing!

I'm well aware of copyright laws, copyright commons, etc, etc. This song is already copyrighted to me. Allowing y'all to use it is my pleasure, and I don't want it to become part of any copyright argument. I've given notice here, and by law that is my only necessary step.

We'd disagree on the length of copyright terms, and probably a lot of other copyright related things, but as I'd mentioned earlier, I'm not interested in this being a political thread.
Either use it or don't, it's there for the taking. It's not often that songs from multi-Grammy winning artists are given out for free. (I mention the Grammy not to brag, but rather to point out that I DO know the music and copyright business fairly well)
