HDV to 24p in VEGAS 6 - link

"Already no stranger to 24p production in its previous iterations, Vegas is able to take the 1080/60i HDV footage from Sony ’s FX-1 and Z-1 camcorders and convert them to 24p. That’s a nifty way to solve a controversial feature choice of Sony ’s HDV camcorders . This easy conversion from 60i to 24p turns out to be a nimble way to address what many users, and perhaps even more in the press, described as a crucial issue—the lack of 24p support in the new Sony 1080i camcorders Q"

Also, the article seems to say that Vegas 6 users will not have to buy Cineform. (You read it and tell me your interpretation.)

I can't comment much on this, Jerry, but...
www.vasst.com/gearshift.htm

It utilizes some very cool things inside of Vegas, and provides some flawless conversions. I can't comment on whether you get Cineform inside of Vegas 6 or not. Not til MOnday.

BTW, there are screenshots of Vegas 6 posted...

Call it a sneak peek

Jerry Waters April 15th, 2005 10:25 PM

Thanks, Douglas. I hope to see you Monday. Reading the article again makes me believe this upgrade is all we hoped for and more.. It looks like Sony did one hell of a job.

We get all your secrets Monday?

WTH????

Can I speak on GEARSHIFT now DSE??? Am I cleared of my NDA???

*smile*

Just guessing -- we have to buy the codec, do not have to buy HDconnect.

James Darren April 16th, 2005 08:01 PM

will it also convert HDV 1080/50i to 25p for people in PAL countries?....

Jerry Waters April 16th, 2005 10:12 PM

It sure looks like it (or Gearshift) will..

Check out Gearshift at:
http://www.vasst.com/Gearshift/gearshift_faq.htm
This is the FAQ page and covers PAL.

Douglas Spotted Eagle April 17th, 2005 12:39 AM

Shannon, the "official" release of Gearshift is tied to the Vegas 6 launch, but since we've made the information page live, go for it. We're two builds newer now than what we were when you last played with it.

Jerry Waters April 17th, 2005 04:35 AM

Yes, explain your post about the "clean 24p shoot"

You posted about your 24p shoot earlier in the week now comes to light. Unfortunately, I'm on the way to the airport and will not get to read it for a while.

Aaron Koolen April 17th, 2005 04:48 AM

Screenshots look interesting. Thanks for those Spot. The Media Manager looks *VERY* interesting - am I right in thinking that you can have custom tags? If so, that is awesome. Combine a custom tag like "Scene 1" and a (what I assum) inbuilt "CU" and you can quickly find all scene 1 CU's.

Man, I hope so!

Aaron

Douglas Spotted Eagle April 17th, 2005 07:38 AM

Here's the rub, Aaron....I was allowed to break NDA and post screenshots to more or less rebutt something said in a newsmagazine, but I was not given permission to break NDA and comment on the tools until 9 a.m. tomorrow morning. However, I'd say you're a pretty perceptive guy.

Mark Kubat April 23rd, 2005 10:01 AM

Spot - can you explain Charlie White's quote?

What exactly is the "new feature" for 60i to 24p conversion in Vegas 6?

What process are we supposed to follow?

Sony homepage has 60i to 24p conversions as "new feature" for Vegas 6 only listed in comparison chart...

are we still supposed to follow the "recipe" in the 24p whitepaper at the end? This deviates from what the Vegas 6 "How Do I" tells us...

Please, DSE...

Spell out for us HOW to do 60i to 24p conversion in Vegas 6 - without Gearshift.

Thank you!

Douglas Spotted Eagle April 23rd, 2005 10:20 AM

It's fairly simple.
Start a new project.

Set your project properties:

From the File menu, choose Properties. The Project Properties dialog is displayed.

From the Template drop-down list, choose NTSC DV 24p

Click OK to close the Project Properties dialog and apply your changes.

Add the video to the timeline.

From the File menu, choose Render As and render the file using the NTSC DV 24p (inserting 2-3-3-2 pulldown) AVI template. This template allows for more efficient pulldown removal.

Gearshift provides a few additional instructions, but overall, it's basically the same.
For the best framerate conversion, you're going to want to have shot your media at 1/60 shutter speed, but anything will convert.

Mark Kubat April 23rd, 2005 12:55 PM

thank you - just to clarify...

so the "old" steps of disabling resampling as per white paper... no longer necessary? just want to be sure...

also, no more setting deinterlace to blend or interpolate?

thank you!

same steps for cf modes? cf24? cf25? cf30?

DSE - did you have fun at NAB?

Chris Hurd April 23rd, 2005 01:23 PM

Heh. He had fun, all right. You shoulda seen him in full swing at the VASST party Tuesday night!
