Vegas 6 always crashing
 

Vegas 6 constantly crashes. When I open the program up for the first time it will always crash. Then I gotta Ctrl+Alt+Del, them start it up then it works fine. Cant figure out the problem.

Im using a P4 HT 3.2 Ghz and have 1.5 Gig RAM.

Anyone know whats going on?

First of all, it would be more accurate to say YOUR Vegas 6 always crashes. Mine is running just fine. Let's try a few questions to see if we can get yours running fine too.

First of all, are you running Vegas 6.0b? If you installed 6.0 or 6.0a then I strongly recommend that you update to 6.0b.

Second, did the Media Manager install correctly?

Third, what happens if you go to Options - Preferences and turn OFF the Media Manager?

hehe. unfortunately its not only mine. My personal workstation crashes, both of the stations at my job and the computer we were using for the HVUG meeting last night as well. But mine crashs much more often.

anyway, all computers are running 6.0b, Media manager was installed correctly. This is actually the second time that this problem occured. The first time it happened i uninstalled my Acid 5, DVD3, Sound Forge and Vegas then reinstalled everything again with the latest updates from the site. It worked fine for a little while, now its starting to act up again.

When I disable the Media Manager, it seems to work a little better. However, dows this mean that I need to reinstall Media Manager again? And will I have to keep on reinstalling Media Manager every month?

What is your preview RAM allowance set to in the options? I have 2 gigs of RAM, and even though I could set it to 1919 mb (max allowable) in 5, in 6 it crashes after a few minutes. Once I lowered my RAM down to 300mb everything works fine. I dont know what your magic number will be, but start off by setting back to 16mb (default). Course, this may not at all be your problem, and it makes no sense logically, but it fixed mine with no further troubles of any sort.

The program crashes before it even starts. I have a feeling that its the media manager again because I turned it off in preferences and now it starts up fine.

It sucks that I gotta reinstall the software for the third time in less then two months. Oh well.

Does anyone know what the conflict with the media manager is?

Correction: Vegas never crashes!

You are probably using your system to surf the web, picking up countless trojans, spyware, etc. You probably deleted some dll files that were critical to OS operation. I've owned Vegas since version 3.0 and the only 2 crashes that I had were entirely my own. Also, check your ram or video card, perhaps you are not updating your drivers, esp vid card. Check your bios setings, you probably need to make some adjustments there as well. I can bet you it has more to do with your systems settings than Vegas itself.

you have codec-pacs (nimo, k-lite, etc)?

Sounds to me like its time to do a fresh install--that should solve the problem.

None. One time at the beginning of those months should be sufficient. I've been using Vegas 6 for many months with only updates being installed as they are released.

Just to give a bit of explenation as to what is going on underwater. The
media manger "back-end" is actually Microsoft SQL Server (a database
engine) being installed. It is not the full product but a "desktop/free" version
known as MSDE. Now this product is highly stable (I'm using it and it's big
brother every single day on numerous servers and workstations), but
perhaps it starts a bit slow on first use (it does use a lot of resources)
and Vegas has some troubles with that? Who knows, time will tell (hopefully).

I just wanted to let everyone know that underwater two programs are
talking to each-other, this may give you an idea to solve any problems
that may be going on. Or it may be of no use to anyone at all *grin*

I have been using Vegas 6.0b exclusively. Works Great!

I was using Vegas 4.0 and waited until 6.0b came out before I switched my production editing to Vegas 6.0.

I have not had any serious issues, it has worked very well.

The media manager failed once when I attempted to close one of its subwindors (Properties Window, I believe).

I probably have 100 to 200 hours of actual editing time using Vegas 6.0b.

By the way, the media manager is great! It is very helpful when you tag your files and can immediately find them, regardless of which physical drive they are on.
