Proxy editing with Vegas and 5.1

I am looking at using Vegas 9 mostly because I believe it can output 5.1 audio and I want to preserve the 5.1 audio from my Panasonic HD camcorder.

I need to proxy edit since my PC isnt powerful enough to edit the AVCHD files.

Can anyone give me some advice on how to properly proxy edit with Vegas and preserve the 5.1 audio whn exporting (rendering?). Output should be a bluray type file for playback on PS3.

i.e.
- how should I encode the files to the proxy file (mpeg, avi etc)?
- do the proxy files need to have the 5.1 audio?

I have noticed that even if I set the project up to be 5.1 audio on the master bus - if I import the proaxy (stereo) avi, edit and then swap back in the full HD AVCHD with 5.1, the audio only remains on 1 audio track and looks as if it has been converted to stereo - even though the AVCHD source is def 5.1

Perhaps someone can run a quick test to see what I mean, and if there is a way to get round this that I'm missing.

Many Thanks,

Steven

http://www.cineform.com/neoscene/

Use that to transcode it will maintain the audio. Do your editing etc then save to whatever format your planning on for your final cut.

Thanks I already tried to use Neoscene and it wont work on my PC.

I contacted the Neoscene support and they were unable to do anything to help.

Hence the proxy editing! :)

VASST Gearshift?

Jeff Harper January 27th, 2010 07:15 PM

I think he would need UpShift by Vasst for AVCHD, not Gearshift...Gearshift works for mt2 files, Upshift is for AVCHD. My personal experience is that Gearshift is marvelous; own it and love it. Upshift proxies were terrible, but it is possible I didn't use it correctly. One of reasons I abandoned my HMC 150...AVCHD sucked for me I couldn't find a suitable workflow with it. Upshift is an older program, I believe (could be wrong) but it seemed to be not nearly as great as Gearshift. Again, could have been the user, though I thought I gave it a decent chance.

This is the method I was trying to follow for proxy editing:

but the 5.1 is causing me headaches.

So your video is OK, but it's just the audio that is giving you concern?

Why not bring in the proxies and your masters sync both up then delete the audio track from the proxy and the video track from the master?

Steven Rankin January 29th, 2010 04:12 AM

Thanks - will look into trying this. I guess I could then group the audio from the master and the video from the proxy.

With regards to exporting 5.1 from vegas - is there any special way to do this i.e. does it have to be a separate .ac3 file?

Depends on what your outputing for...

Steven Rankin January 29th, 2010 08:00 AM

I was to output for playback from the PS3 - so Blu ray HD, think thats an .m2v file or .m2ts.
Or I guess MPEG2 Blu Ray...

try one of the Vegas presets for Blu-ray?

Steven,
I made a script to split stereo audio channels into 5.1 Surround audio channels.
You can find it here. (Stereo to Surround for Vegas Pro 9)

Please, read txt file for instructions.
