HD External Monitor Preview & Video Card

Back in the old SD days, I used to preview my video on a "S" connected TV through a camcorder. Since I've swtiched to recording and editing only HDV, I no longer have an external monitor preview.

I'm designing a new PC and trying to decide the features of the new video card. I want dual dvi, but would a third HDMI and DisplayPort be of any use with Vegas? The XFX Radeon 5770 card supports these ports, but only the DisplayPort can be used together with the 2 DVI ports. Could the third DisplayPort monitort be used as Vegas external monitor preview and is there any value in that?

Thanks.

I'm a rather new contributor here but I am surprised that no one attempted to give you an answer.

The new rig I built last December has an HD 4670 with VGA, DVI and HDMI ports. Unfortunately, I can only use the VGA with the HDMI. It is not unusual for only two monitors to be supported. The 22 inch ACER primary monitor works for me just as well visually on the VGA port so I am content with it.

The HDMI port is connected to a 15 inch Element HDTV and 9 Platinum is set to display sound and video to it. I have also tried simply moving the Vegas monitor window over to the HDTV and it seems to work just about as well. Doing that with an SD timeline works very well - better than expected.

I still use a 14 inch monitor TV fed through S-Video and a DATAVIDEO DAC-100 A/D converter because I still have a few projects left to finish up using Adobe Premiere Elements version 2. That system has worked very well for me for five years now and, even though inexpensive, gave very accurate results on my finished DVDs. Once those projects are finished it will be time to move on. And Sony Vegas MS9P is a serious and welcome step up.

David,

You can get pretty inexpensive cards that will let you run hdmi and dvi or vga. I have an economical radeon 3450hd card, I think they are well under a hundred dollars. I use a 30 inch hd hdmi monitor as primary and a 19 inch dvi and use it simply by pulling the preview window over onto it. I have also used it by clicking on the exterior monitor button as well, but some reason sometimes it doesn't want to work then I have to go back and reset the monitors.

I woould keep it simple and not waste a pile of money on expensive graphic cards, particular sense vegas doesn't optimize the ram on them!!
