16x9 DVX footage squished with black bars top and bottom during capture???

Hey all,

This is an issue in Vegas that has popped up in the past month or so and I can't figure out why it's happening.

I shoot DVX cams in 16x9 "Squeeze" mode.

The footage captures in a "squished" look with black bars on top and bottom instead of filling the 16x9 capture preview window.

So, in Vegas I have to apply a 16x9 crop to fix.

Anybody have an idea why the footage is not capturing full 16x9 but in the above mentioned way?

Any assistance would be appreciated to cut down on my need to crop every bloody clip.

sincerely,

ian

Are your project properties set to match your source video?

Ian Slessor May 28th, 2010 07:36 AM

Hey Mike,

Thanks for the response.

This is occurring during the actual capture process itself.

The preview window during capture shows the aforementioned issues of squished footage with top and bottom black bars in a 16x9 window.

I've looked through options & preferences in the capture window and find nothing to help me get a full 16x9 capture.

Any ideas?

sincerely,

ian

Ian, in VidCap, try Options-Preferences-Preview and set it to "1.2121 (NTSC DV Widescreen)".

Yup.

Did that, Mike.

You're going to love this.....

Just put a fresh tape in...and it's fine. Full-screen 16x9 preview AND capture.

WTF?!?!?!?!?!

Now I'm confused.

Ian, I've read (but never experienced it myself) about VidCap getting confused if you start capturing before it gets "up to speed", so to speak.
PAL users have complained that it switches to NTSC mode on them :-(
If you can do it, try starting your capture AFTER the specific scene has been playing for at least 5 sec.
This is another good reason for making sure that you shoot lots of extra "heads & tails" on any scene.

Thanks, Mike.

I'll check that out.

Apparently, if you use "letterbox" mode on the DVX the image is cropped as I've described.

Soooo. Apparently I had inadvertently switched from squeeze to letterbox and thus my issues.

Lesson learned.

Thanks for the help.

Ian, I'm not the one who solved it but I'll take the credit if you want me to :-)

Participation=help...even if it wasn't the help I was seeking.

Thanks, Mike. :)
