Huge FCP .MOV files - what codec?

I have been given some .MOV files from FCP. They are HUGE ( ~130Gb for 80mins) but nothing I have seems to be able to decode the video stream, including trials of NeoScene.

Most apps will play the audio (including Vegas 8), but nothing can play the video. Even tried it on a Macbook.

The Quicktime movie info window tells me it is 10bit uncompressed, data rate 233Mb/s.

The only tool that I have which seems to be able to do something this them is "Handbrake", which is the path I am taking. Slight workflow issue there though: if I create an .MP4 (x.264) file, Vegas crashes as soon as I attempt to load it. Creating a .M4V (ffmpeg) also crashes Vegas. However, renaming the .M4V to .MP4 ... good to go.

Also the generated .M4V & .MP4 files are a fraction of the size of the source clips (2% maybe?).

So I have a work around, but I am curious, what would the source codec be?

Any thoughts?

Try opening it in VLC media player. It plays almost anything, and will have an info window that should tell you the codec.

Vito,

You're a genius! Downloaded the latest VLC. It couldn't play it, but it reported the format as:

10-bit 4:2:2 Component YCbCr (v210).

Tracked down and installed a codec for it and how all appears fine - will even play in Vegas.

Thanks for the tip.
