Can the project settings be changed after footage has been imported to Vegas?
Had a brain freeze, so the settings were 720 x 480, native resolution was 1920 x 1080. Am I stuck with the lower res from now on? Unfortunately, I don't have the 1920 x 1080 originals. Is there any way to "upconvert"?

You can change the project settings at anytime. File>Properties.

If you started with 1920x1080, editing and rendered to 720x480, and then deleted the 1920x1080 files, you're stuck at the lower resolution now. Are the original files totally gone? What about the original media from the camera? (tapes/memory cards, etc...)

I'm still editing, have not rendered.
Original footage on the memory card is gone. Thanks, |
Is the footage on your timeline 1920 x 1080 or 720 x 480?

I just changed the res to 1920 x 1080, it was accepted, let's see how the final product turns out. Thanks,

As long as you still have HD footage on the timeline, all will be fine. It was confusing the way you worded things to determine whether or not the footage on the timeline is still the original HD footage. Either way, you can always change the project resolution to 1920x1080 - but that doesn't mean the output will be truly HD. If the footage on the timeline is not HD, it will simply stretch out the SD footage. At this point we'll assume the footage on the timeline is still HD.

I assumed that you still had the 1920x1080 files on your hard drive. If you open your Vegas file and you don't get a window saying that it can't fine the files, you should be ok.
