Re: Portable External Hard Drives

A Mac can read/copy from an NTFS drive just fine. I do it routinely. But it will not WRITE to the drive so they will not be able to give you larger files. Now, as for whether or not they can edit them... :-)

Seriously, if their NLE can read the files, yes, they can edit them - just copy off your NTFS drive to their local drive and they're good to go.

There ARE programs for the Mac that will let them write to an NTFS drive and there are also programs for the PC that will let them write to a Mac formatted drive.

Thanks Edward, that's good news. On occasion I'm asked to give raw video to folks, it's good to know I can simply put it on my drive and give it to them regardless of their machine type. Since my drives are always formatted NTFS, I'm good to go.

Please provide name(s) of programs that will allow Mac's to write to NTFS external hard disk drives. (I need one!) Thanks.

Just google "mac write to ntfs". A couple names that pop up are Paragon and Tuxera. There's also something called NTFS-3G. Just do a quick search and you'll get many hits.

I would recommend a 2.5 cabinet with two drives for RAID1 mirroring

I use this one for offloading memory cards...

If you trash one drive you will not loose any data since it is mirrored
