2 different sources...24p and 50i, how to synch?
 

HOla,

dear guys, we'll have to edit next week a doc shot with an HDSLR (nikon d5100) in 24p mode and the second device was a Sony FX1 that was recording as a backup camera (just for the good audio mic interview) in 50i.
When i'll have the chance to have both videos to put in timeline i need the nikon footage to use cause the better video quality but i'll have to choose the audio track from the FX1 just for the good audio recorded and checked during the recording trough the headphones.
What are your suggestion for this strange kind of edit?

If you mean syncing the Nikon video to the Sony audio, take a serious look at PluralEyes as this is what it's designed to do.
Do a search on it here and you'll find several very satisfied users.

But considering the quality a Fx1 can give you why wouldn't you just shoot it with that and save you mounds of grief??

Pretty easy I would think.
You didnt say what your final output will be, either way maybe give this a go.
Convert the 50i into 25p with your intermediate.
So now you have 24p and 25p on your 25p timeline,
Disable resample on the 24p clip you want to change speed on
Change Project Properties/Ruler/ to Absolute Frames.
Sync the audio as early as you can , First few seconds if you can.
Go to end of project and control drag the end of 24p clip to sync audio at the end.
Done
If output will be 24p then swap things round accordingly.

Another workflow would be to extract the audio as a wav file from the FX1 footage and then proceed as if you had recorded dual system using a separate audio recorder. The wav file makes the different frame rate of the FX1 video irrelevant.

1. Create a 50i project and load the FX1 video into it. Then render only the audio as a wav file.
2. Create a new 24p project and load only the d5100 video into it.
3. Now add the wav file from step 1 into the 24p project and synchronize it to the d5100 footage.
4. Render the project as 24p.

Note, when using the FX1 as an audio recorder make sure to switch it to standard definition DV mode with uncompressed 16-bit audio rather than HDV mode with highly-compressed mp2 audio.

That would be easier, I just presumed he wanted to use some of the back up cam, therefore being synced to its own audio, as well.
Still, shouldnt be much of a problem anyway.

Dale, i'm using video quality of the 5100 cause is much better cause the DOF that these DSLR could offer nowaday....
the FX1 unfortunately is not that good in the comparison but....you can check the sound while you record with the FX1 and you can't without Beachtech on a DSLR.
So i tryed to pick the best from what i had available: Video from HDSLR and audio from an FX1.

Hey Marcus,
If you dont need any of your FX1 footage (or none of it synced at least), what Eric suggested is probably quicker and easier.
I was thinking you wanted to cut between the 2 cams, although mainly using the DSLR footage.
