AVCCAM to SD
 
Just a quick newbie question: In Vegas can you take AVCCAM video and downgrade it to Standard Def video. I am using the sony vx2100 right now but want to upgrade to a HD camera but still want to be able to give my customers SD video if they want it. So I guess my question is: can you take AVCCAM video down to SD video in Vegas?

Yep, after editing just do a File - Render As to whichever SD codec you need (i.e. MPEG2 if going to DVD). I would render using "Best" since you're resizing. I'm sure others will have more tips.

In no way am I contradicting Edward, you can do this just fine, but if you want to preserve the quality of your HD footage through the conversion a little better,
export to Lagarith codec in the same size as your input,
open in Virtualdub (google if you dont know it)
select resize from the filters,
choose Lanczos3 for the resize method,
set frame size 1024x576 (pal, google or work out for ntsc square pixel),
export to Lagarith again,
Import this back into Vegas 720x576(pal) or 720x480(ntsc) project, or your DVD authoring software, and convert to mpeg2.
It will be sharper and have way less "jaggy edges" than if done in Vegas.
But then again, some people cant see the difference, lol.
Worth doing once to see though.

I haven't seen that it's necessary in V10; it seems to have done away with the 1080 to SD scaling problems of earlier versions.

However, if there's still a problem, it may be simpler just to export as 720p from Vegas and then re-export that as SD. Results are excellent.

Hi Gary

Also make sure that your computer will be able to handle AVCHD clips too!!! Remember that editing SD will be smooth and painless at the moment but suddenly drop a highly compressed clip on your timeline and unless you have at least a quadcore machine it will battle with the native footage.

I only have a DuoCore so I transcode the footage to Canopus HQAVI (still at 1920x1080) and Vegas handles that sweetly. Most seem to use Cineform though!!
