PAL to NTSC (again!)

I appreciate this is a topic that has been covered before so apologies for resurrecting it. My reason for asking again is in the event that there has been any improvement in current versions of Vegas Pro.

I am shooting a load of b-roll and some interviews tomorrow on a PAL Canon XH-A1S (HDV m2t files). My client wants the footage converted to 29.97 NTSC H.264 .mov. She works in FCP.

Does anyone have a tried and tested conversion method that will work well with Vegas? I believe I will have to go through several steps to achieve this (i.e. convert to 24p then to 60i, if I understand correctly).

I believe DV Film Atlantis is an option (although I think even then I would have to convert to h.264 in another app). I also have access to Adobe Media Encoder. Ideally I would do all this from the Vegas timeline though, after I have cleaned up the footage.

Any thoughts as to my best route? I have a modest budget for any additional software if needed.

Thanks, as always, for any guidance.

Just a note on what to encode too,
Why h264?
You could encode to DnxHd from Vegas and she can use on Mac with virtually zero quality loss.
Just 2c
Good luck

Re: PAL to NTSC (again!)

Hi Gerald,

Yep, we agreed on Avid DnxHD. Should have updated the thread. I looked at DV Atlantis, by the way, and the demo version didn't do itself justice. I will try again and see if I can improve on it by tweaking settings, but I may go the avisynth/virtualdub route.

Cheers,

Ian . . .
