request: a comprehensive guide to rendering

hi all
I am getting decently good in using Vegas 10, but my big Achilles heel is rendering.
I still find confusing to decide what to render to (and the reasons why I should use one format versus another), and the relation of that to the file properties I must have set up previously.
I often come up with unsatisfactory results with the final clip.
I mainly shoot 25p with Canon 5D mk2 (hence producing h264) and the Canon HF g10 (hence AVCHD mts files).
my main need is to upload to Internet (Vimeo, Youtube and others) but also Bluray.

I would be really grateful if someone took the time to cast some light on me.

thanks
Federico
