Sony Vegas 11 recommended export format
 

I just upgraded from Vegas 8 pro to 11 pro.
I see that Sony has dropped the cineform codec in 11.
That was my preffered archive and export format, so I can't currently load my dozens of projects created in 8.
Before I rush out and buy cineform, I wanted to ask what format native to Vegas 11 might be a useful alternative?
I just rendered a short 60 second clip as an hd 1080-60i YUV and it was almost a whopping 9 gig! That's unmanagable, not to mention that playback wasn't up to par even in draft mode.

Actually, you do not need to purchase NeoScene or any other paid GoPro Cineform product unless your video resolution is higher than 1080i/p. GoPro now offers a free Cineform Studio program (just give them your e-mail address, then follow the link in the e-mail that you receive from GoPro and enter the code in the resulting page to download the program). The free Cineform Studio is perfect for your purpose. Sony has discontinued including the Cineform codec starting with Vegas Pro 9.

And the reason as to why the HD 1080-60i YUV AVI encodes are so large because such files are "uncompressed" but constrained within the 4:2:2 color space. That eats up around 700-ish GB per hour. Uncompressed RGB 4:4:4 1080i video eats up all of 900+ GB per hour.

That's great. I just downloaded it.
I had a couple more questions if that's OK.
First, when I put one of my old cineform clips on my Vegas 11 timeline, the aspect ratio now appears wrong. It looks like it's importing as 4:3 though previously it was 16:9. So, it's "squinched."
And second, how do I render in cineform from Vegas 11 with this free version?
I don't see an option under render yet...

To correct for the "squinching", right click on the video clip and select Properties. Go to Aspect Ratio, and make sure that it's set to the NTSC Widescreen (1.2121).

As for rendering (encoding), select "Options" or "Custom" after selecting "Microsoft AVI". The drop-down box in the Video page has a list of codecs (by default for your selection, the Sony YUV codec is shown; you need to change that to "GoPro Cineform"). Then, after selecting "GoPro Cineform", you can then click "Options" besides the codec selection window and choose the quality of your export(s).

O.K., after a shut down and restart, unfortunately, I'm still not seeing anything under the render menu I recognize as cineform.
Back in 8 it appeared under the menu with avi formats.
I may be missing something obvious.

And also, from within Vegas 11, what native format do you recommend for archiving or exporting footage?

Those are just presets. If you select a 1080i preset, you should be able to use custom settings. The presets for HD are all uncompressed but constrained with the 4:2:2 color space. If your settings template is anything like the Vegas 9 I have, you should see a "Custom" button next to the preset that you selected. Once you enter the Custom sections, there is a drop-down box for the codec used (by default, it should say "Sony YUV"). Change that to the one that begins with "GoPro Cineform". Save those new resulting settings as a new custom preset (give it a name that you can remember).
