Capturing video clips from Canon XF300
 

Hi, I borrowed a Canon XF300. I downloaded the program with no problem. I copied the video clips to the program. How do I now move them into Vegas 10? Thanks. Bob

Mike, I am running Canon vs. 1.2 and Vegas 10. I figured out how to move a single clip at a time into Vegas ( I ha to use adobe reader). What I can't figure out is how to batch move them.

Bob, if the clips are showing up in the Project Media tab, can you not just drag them all onto your timeline?

You select them all in Windows explorer (shift-select if they are continuous in the explorer, or control-select otherwise) and you drag them all to Vegas Project Media tab. Then you would typically click somewhere within the Project Media tab to deselect them all.

I have not found a sensible way to do this unless I've used the Canon Utility to export to MXF to a Folder you wont see a collection of single MXF files to grab and drag.

If others have a better way, I'm all ears.

Just a further thought, have you checked to see if the Canon Camera has the Firmware to USE Version 1.2?

Go to your windows explorer and select the CF card folder. Then do a search for .mxf files.
Give it a second or two and select all files. Then copy to wherever and from there drag onto timeline.

That canon XF utility is a joke.

What I do is put the card into my media slot on my computer, then I copy the whole Contents folder to a project directory on my hard drive. I can then use the Canon XF utility to make it virtual media.

The Canon XF utility is useful to me to browse the meta-data on the clips, especially when dealing with multiple cameras. There's a wealth of information in there about the color temperature, aperture, focal length, etc.

When I want to use clips in Vegas, I just do like Bjorn said - use Windows Explorer to search the Contents structure for "MXF". Then I just drag-and-drop them right into Vegas, in the correct order. Couldn't be easier.

Yes, at that level I agree. However, try and get clips over that 2gb limit? Also, clips that span 2 CF cards. As to getting data about the files/shots - have you found a way to have that displayed in Vegas . .. or even Win7?

As to the 3 or 4 step tango > Card > Copy Structure > Create Virtual Media > Export to MXF > Drag and drop into Vegas. When all others need to do is access Device Manager and their media is there for the taking.

No, it's about time Canon & SONY got busy sorting this out.

Hey everyone, thanks for all the information. I ended up useing the Canon Utility to convert the clips to an .mxf files and move those into Vegas. Since I had to return the Canon XF305 back to the sales rep I no longer have the CF card. Next time I get one I will try going straight into a file via windows. I must say that this Canon XF305 rocks. Thanks again. Bob

Yep, do it all the time. I copy all the Contents folders from all my cards from multiple cameras under one folder, then I just do a search in Explorer for MXF, and drag and drop them right into Vegas. I haven't had any issues with the 2GB limit or spanning cards. The files work properly at the boundaries.

As I said, I just use the Canon XF utility for the meta data, which I don't need very often, but it's nice to have.
