Best render settings for youtube with Vegas 10
 

Hola guys,

What are your suggestions to have the best quality in youtube?
I always use Sony Avc template internet 25 p. Any other suggestions?

You can use a much higher bitrate than an internet template provides.

Remember, you're not doing the encode for distribution. YT will encode and compress whatever you send them.

A high-bitrate file, 10Mbps for low-motion video or up to maybe 17Mbps for high-motion video is good for 1080p 25fps.

Sony's AVC isn't a bad encoder, perhaps the MainConcept MP4 is slightly better, but at these high bitrates it doesn't make much of a difference.

In Vegas 10 I also tend to use the Sony AVC template and that at 1920x1080 25P defaults to 16,000 but I usually just cut that down by half and render at 8,000 ....Are you rendering from 4K footage or 1080 footage Marcus? I get a much nicer result if I put 3840x2160 footage on the timeline and render down to the 1920x1080 25P template.

You can also upload 4K to You Tube but I couldn't find any suitable preset so I use Vegas 13 for those renders ...huge files however tend to load so slowly on an average internet connection. I would rather have a seamless viewing experience and forsake a little quality than have perfect video but one that stops and buffers every minute.

On the average computer monitor I wonder where the cutoff point is between practicality and quality ..8,000 seems to give quite a nice end result and the file isn't too huge. ... If you render at 8,000 and then 16,000 I wonder if you could actually spot the difference??

OK so that's HDV and also interlaced ... I wonder if Vegas is doing a decent job of the de-interlacing? ... I must admit my progressive footage does look better now days than when I used to shoot at 50i ... What de-interlace settings are you using in Project settings? I know that render quality needs to be set at "Best" but it's tough to decide whether to use the Blend or Interpolate settings!!

In any case you will still get a slightly lower vertical resolution after delinterlacing so maybe that's why the You Tube clips don't look as good ???

Maybe someone else who uses HDV has found some good settings for rendering You Tube destined videos??

Do you have a previous upload on You Tube that you are not happy with?? Maybe post the clip and we can spot what going on??

90%of my footage comes from DSLRS shots in 24p (no good in PAL land)....
So i should render an HDV 1080 50I into something else?

Now I'm confused! Most of your footage is in 24P (BTW: that's no issue for PAL) so it's progressive footage ... Is it 720 24P or 1080 24P ... If you upload a clip in YT all Vegas will do is add an extra frame so using the 25P setting is fine. However I would be reluctant to upsize source footage ..If the DSLR footage is 1080 then render out as 1920x1080 or 1280x720 for You Tube ..If you have 720P footage then rather render that out at 1280x720 only.

I cannot see any point of playing with 1440x1080 footage if you only use it 10% of the time.. rather use the 24P footage if the resolution is better. Big question is ...Are you trying to mix 1440x 1080 50i clips and the DSLR 24P clips ??? That might be the issue?

Probably the main issue is that you are mixing 1920x1080 24P which is a progressive square pixel format with a 1:1 aspect ratio with interlaced 1440x1080 which has a different aspect ratio and also needs to be de-interlaced too. See if anyone here is maybe mixing 50i HDV with 1080 24P .... Vegas will do it but I have a feeling that the end result will end up with a lower resolution?

Maybe time to trade in the HDV camera now??

It does seem like the best quality overall will be with project settings that match your dslr footage.

Then you can explore the best way to conform the HDV footage to those settings... I've not personally explored this in 24p, 25p, or 1080-50i workflows, it may be that your HDV footage will conform nicely without trouble.

If you do have to transcode the HDV footage it may be that you'll do better if you render your HDV outside of Vegas. Handbrake? It has the best deinterlacer and resizer/scaler, and also offers some frame-rate controls I've never explored.

Chris is right, I think; if you're concerned about quality, working at the native resolution and framerate of 90% of your footage is a best first step.
