Cineform - Smart Render question

I'm using Cineforms HD Link to convert files from m2t to cineform intermediate. If I check the ‘smart render’ box in preferences, what exactly is that doing? I understand that it enables faster exports at the expense of a larger file size.

Can anyone explain what exactly is going on here? If I do not select the option, how is that different (the resulting files)?

Thanks --
