Scratch Disks; Should my project file be on the same drive as video files?
 

I read that for optimal performance, place each of your file types on a sperate drive... If you go into scratch disks, you have :

video capture files
Audio capture files
Video preview render files
Audio preview render files
Media Cache
DVD Encoding files


Right now i have 4 drives.
1) My system drive (windows, premiere cs3)
2) 1.8TB RAID array (of 4 500g drives) ( for video and audio capture)
3) 750g drive ( for preview files)
4) 400g drive ( for Media cache)

So should my project file be on the system drive or on the 1.8Tb RAID drive where my video is? Will it make any differece if i put my project file somewhere else? Just wondering. Im thinking it dosnt make a difference... but you never know...

We have had really ggod luck by keeping the project file on the media grive that contains all the video and audio files. Then we keep the auto save vault
on the CPU system drive so that every auto-save saves a copy of your project in case of a major drive failure, but the main project file can travel with the
media from work station to work station

What Matt said. I find from an organization perspective that keeping everything on one drive is simpler and easier to work with.

But Matt's idea of keeping the backups on a different drive is brilliant. I'm changing my settings tomorrow.

Hey Tyson... how did you build your RAID 5 (assuming its a Raid5) 4-disk array for video drive? I am thinking of going RAID 5 but have very little experience with how to set it up. Any advice would be appreciated.

Does anyone have an idea where Premiere stores thumbnails of clips in bins? On some projects I have hundreds of clips and Premiere CS3 cannot cope when scrolling... it constantly "forgets" thumbnails and needs to refresh them. C2D with 2 GB RAM should be enough for this, right?
