Editing Corupt video on CS4

I've taken on a rotten job. A one hour long rescue of some valuable, archive (not cost) wise material. It's mpg and has lots of data errors - some giving odd green or colour blocks or banding - just like dodgy DV tape, and some missing bits of audio waveform - all very short and editable.

The trouble is, premiere is happy until the point where the data is corrupt, and then it crashes. If I scrub the time-line around the dodgy material, it's ok, but stop on the bad bit, or play through it and down it goes. So basically I keep saving after rendering small chunks - 5 mins or so. If it doesn't crash during the render. I save and move on. Then I come across a 5 min section with something horrible in it, and it crashes, then I can go back to the start and bit by bit, identify good and bad bits. Once I've identified the bad bits I can delete the short section and re-edit to cover the gaps.

Has anyone found a better way to do this - 6 hours so far, and still a few glitches I've yet to find.

There are free apps that do a good job fixing mpegs. I used one called Mpeg2Repair to fix recorded over-the-air digital broadcast (which is mpeg2).

This may be a crazy idea . . . transfer everything to a tape format, and then capture it back into Premiere with unblemished, uncorrupted files.
