Mixing progressive and interlaced - but what output for DVD?
 

Hi all

I think i'm getting my knickers in a twist here!

I'm mixing footage from my 7D (1080p), with footage from my XH-A1 (1080i, upper-field)

Making a Blu-Ray with Encore CS4 is fine.
Pressing the drop-down from Blu-Ray to DVD seems to downconvert quite badly, and it won't seem to let me change the transcode settings or quality presets.

so...

I've resorted to making DVDs separately again (what a shame!).

But now i'm getting confused.

Am I aiming to make interlaced/progressive avi or mpeg, for the DVD? I'll keep running tests, but if anyone can shed some light or good working procedures???

p.s. I'm in PAL land, so aiming for PAL Widescreen DVD....

Go for MPEG2-DVD PAL 720 x 576 i.

Going for P will still be wrapped in a 50i wrapper and will only lose half the vertical resolution. Keeping it i will not deteriorate the p material, just package it differently. All Hollywood DVD's are still wrapped in i format.

Just to clarify before we go down the wrong path here....
You do know that the XH A1 will output progressive 1080p, at 30fps, correct?

In the future, if the issue is mixing interlaced and progressive, then this might be a fix...

If it's downconversion that's the issue, then unfortunately, AME does a terrible job of this, regardless of interlaced or progressive footage..

If it's DVD's you're outputting to, then irregardless, the information gets displayed as interlaced anyways...Aside from looks and colour correction, it shouldn't matter what footage you drop into Encore.

BTW, i find that reopening an Encore project, allows me to get into the transcode settings...

you've hit the nail on the head!! I admit I've avoided using 25F since buying my xh-a1s because of the restrictions compared to 50i (not as good for slow-mo, fast movement restrictions, slight quality loss).

But you're spot on. I need to start filming in 25F so I'm shooting progressive, to match the SLR.

I'll sort out my current edits (25P and 50i) but then change how I film (25p and 25f)!
