Windows or OS X?
 

Hi, everyone.

I'm excited about Adobe Creative Cloud. I'm especially excited about the price. I can install it on my Mac or on my Windows PC. On which platform does it run better?

Note that I'm editing QuickTime .mov files with the XDCAM EX codec, but I wouldn't expect that to make much difference.

XDCAM in .mov wrapper is only supported on OS X.

Exactly, platform doesn't matter, performance does, Adobe software requires a powerfull pc/mac, preferably packed with memory and a approved gpu to get the most from it.

If XDCAM EX footage in a .mov is not supported in OS X, which format should I convert it to for use with Premiere on Windows? What about converting it to lossless h264 within .m4v using handbrake?

XDCAM EX in mov is only supported on OS X. It is not supported on PC. I would suggest shooting XDCAM EX in mp4 wrapper, which is supported by both.

If you can't do it, you can rewrap the files on the OS X to MXF wrapper using Sony's utility, which is supported by both OSes, and it will take less time than transcoding.

Lossless and h264 are two words that exclude each other. h264 is always lossy. Besides, h264 is very CPU intensive.

If you want to transcode, I suggest some codec that is more NLE friendly like ProRes, DNxHD or Cineform. All are supported on both platforms.

Thanks for the ideas. I'm going to have to settle on a codec. I could use Final Cut Pro X to transcode the videos, and maybe clean them up a bit at the same time. Will this be any good for me?

With calibrated{Q} XD Decode you will supposedly be able to read XDCAM EX in mov wrapper on Windows. I have not tried it, so I can't tell one way or another.
