Premiere Pro Hot Video!

I am having complaints about my video levels being too hot on play back after editing. It looks okay on my computer but has problems when on air. I noticed there is a waveform monitor built into the Premiere Pro. Has anyone used it? Is it one volt peak to peak. It is not specific what the numbers on the side are referencing. Any input would be helpful. Thanks!

Lisa,

I'm not in front of PPro right now, so forgive me if some of what I say does not match exactly.

I have found that some DV cameras, in their auto modes, tend to shoot everything a little hot. I have used the waveform in PPro to look at levels so I could reduce them. The numbers on the waveform are what's called IRE. Black level (in the US) is at 7.5 IRE and full white should be at 100 IRE. Anything that goes over 100 IRE could end up "blowing out" or "blooming" or whatever else you want to call the overbright effect you will see on playback. You can use a combination of video level or black level (sometimes called pedestal) to reduce the overall image so it does not go above 100 IRE.

Tektronix is the most popular maker of waveform monitors and vectorscopes. They have great info on their site about what you are seeing on a waveform.

Hope this helps.

Have fun!

Rob
