New to audio mixing

I filmed and outdoor event using a VX2100 camera and used the audio from the camera and also plugged my 80 GB iPod with a MicroMemo Line-In to the iPod from the mixing board. I've got both tracks in my editing software and synced fine. But since I've only worked with on-camera sound in the past, I'm not sure of a "typical workflow" for this situation. The sound from the mixing board obviously didn't pick up the crowd reactions, claps and cheers and such. To use just the audio from the iPod it's clean audio, but there's no external sounds from the crowd. To use just the audio from the camera in spots has extra noise (outdoor fairgrounds). Any suggestions for the best way to handle this?

Along those lines, having only a single camera and no other mic sources, had I patched directly from the mixing board to the camera, what do people do to get the audience reactions?

Thanks,
Grant
