One more thing to consider is the fact that good audio gear has a really long life expectancy. So, if you buy good speakers today, they will still be good speakers 5 years from now (unlike cameras, computers, etc.). That means they will be around to help you get good sound not only on this project, but many other projects to come.

ElectroVoice Sentry 100 are a staple, btw.

How about using a pair of good headphones instead of a $300 pair of speakers then? AKG, Sennheiser, etc - for that price, it will be much better than a pair of cheap speakers.

I have a pair of Genelec with a subwoofer - but, they are way above the $300 budget.

Discussed earlier in the thread, 'phones are good for evaluating a track and for monitoring during recording but should never be used for mixing as they don't give an accurate picture of the sound by their nature. Has nothing to do with quality, just the different physics involved in phones versus speakers.

Actually a good set of speakers are forever. There are no possible quantum improvements possible in transducer/crossover/cabinet design, all this is very mature art.

I could still easily use the Yamaha NS-1000 monitors I bought used in -82...

That's why I mentioned the EV Sentrys.

A good pair of speakers last forever. Very true. I have a pair of JBL professional series - 15" bass, 5" midrange horn, high frequency crystal tweeter. Other than putting in a paper surround for the bass (foam is bad in Singapore - high humidity, high temperature - and foam tends to break away) ... this pair of speakers was purchased in 1976 - and it is still going strong.
