recording non-dialogue sounds

I have read many informative posts here about recoording dialogue. Many of my favorite scenes to watch and to write have no dialogue, but rely on other sounds to define them: the solid clunk of a .38 revolver as it's placed on a wooden tabletop, footsteps, the clatter of silverware dropping onto a ceramic countertop. I like to record these sounds with the shot because I think the way they sound there helps define the space outside the frame.

Can anyone suggest a source for information about microphone choices and placement for these other sounds? Or tips from their own experience.

Thanks.
