I'm using iRivers with the Line-in /Ext.Mic input. I've discovered something very stange and it actually looks like a contradiction in the hardware instruction manual.

(this first part is very clear)
iFP-700 series Manual, page 5-23 states this:

Line-In/Ext. Mic

You can select external microphone or
line-in when recording.
Line-in: To record through line in
Ext. Mic: To record through an external microphone

(it's the NOTE below, found at the bottom of the same manual page, that is very hard to understand) it seems to be a contradiction to the above.....
______________________________________________
NOTE: -To record from an external microphone, chose the LINE-IN recording mode
- The recording quality level will be set to the values chosen for the LINE-IN recording.

Golly, if you could help explain this to me, it would be very much appreciated.

Having made a few recordings with my i890 (?), I believe the translation goes something like this: "Our mic preamp is really horrible. Don't use it. If you use your own preamp, it will sound a lot better."

I know some people use them for weddings, but I haven't had great luck with it.

Wow, thanks Andy.... I didn't even think about that.
First time I've read that type of experience with the iRiver. Golly, I didn't think you needed a preamp using the Giant Squid mic.
