Sennheiser ME66 / K6 Storage and Stuff...
 

Hey All.

Took everyone's advice and bought the Sennheiser ME66 / K6 for my GL2. I do have a few questions on how to care for such a great piece of audio equipment.

1. Should I store it:
a. Fully Assembled
b. Broken Down in 2 pieces
c. With or Without the Battery installed.
d. Does it matter?

2. Do you recommend storing it in it's own foam cut out like the camera or in it's own box?

3. I noticed the little red light flashes ONCE when you Power ON the mic. Does it need to stay solid red?

4. Can anyone explain the little recessed red switch above the power switch?

5. Any additional comments or suggestions?

This is what I do with mine.....

a/b. Fully assembled with a softie over it. Saves wear and tear on the connector assembly.

*c. With Alkaline battery installed.

d. *If its a long period between uses (months) I would remove the battery just in case it leaks.

2. Mine sits (well floats around) in a Pelican 1620 case next to my DSR-250. With the softie attached it stays in place pretty well.

3. The light should flash 'brightly' at turn on and go out. If it flashes but is dull replace the battery(use a fresh battery to get an idea of how bright it should be).

4. The little red switch is a low frequency or Bass remove switch which you can use to help reduce handling and wind noise - its effect is quite pronounced and can lead to the audio being a little 'tinny' and lacking bottem end. You could probably correct in post if needed. I use mine in the flat position and always have the rycote softie attached to combat the wind noise. The mic is usually on the camera or shock mounted on a stand/boom during use.

Tips:
Remember to turn off the mic after use. It'll run for hours and hours but I seem to have to replace the darn thing just before an event because I forgot to do it at its last outing! (If you can use phantom power from the camera, beachtek adaptor or similar this is not such a big problem).

PS: A custom foam has also been cut to receive the mini-mount so the whole mic is protected in the Kata CCC3333.

I was thinking of storing my ME66 in a long fabric protective bag inside my camera case. Secure and protected from scratches, plus, adds no extra carrying case.


PS - If anyone is interested in a K6P (phantom) powering module, see my post in the classifieds. I need the regular K6 and bought the wrong one by mistake. Thanks.
