DPA Lavs?

I was in a sound shop and was told very good things about DPA's lav mics. "The closest sounding to a boom mic."

Any opinions of these lavs?

THANKS.

no lavalier ever would sound as good as directional mic .
most of them would be more influence from the placing or garderob .
so yes these are good mics , very durable , have exellent sonic and sound level handling haracteristics
if you are going for these , 4061 or 4071 for normal work
the 60 is good for low level situtions .

I have the DPA 4063 and it does sound nice. I bought it when I bought my first Zaxcom TRX900 because Zaxcom did not recommend the Sanken COS-11b. I was able to get the Sanken to work properly with the TRX900, so I tend not to use the DPA mic much since I have Sanken mics for all my other wireless units. I'll do some tests and put them up for you to listen to.

I just did this as a quick test of the microphones. All settings were kept the same for both microphones.

Settings:

DPA 4063 > Zaxcom TRX900 > Zaxcom DEVA 5.8 (24/48 HPF 50 Hz)
Sanken COS11b > Zaxcom TRX900 > Zaxcom DEVA 5.8 (24/48 HPF 50 Hz)

Both the original 24/48 and smaller MP3 files are here:

The only thing that really jumps out at you is the Sanken is a bit hotter despite me not changing any levels. However, audio quality wise, I don't think you'll notice much difference. I'll probably have to do longer samples to really do each mic justice, but this is all I had time for this morning.

another thing you need to remember that each voice has effect on how mic would sound.
generally both sounds pretty good , i usually use sankens as they much easier to hide and have less clothing noise problems .

and if you ask me i wouldn't drop extra( 2 to 1) if you really not using them to record opera singers where you need take huge amount of spl that even the sanken red dot cant handle ..
in the same class you can put the mke2 gold as well

Wayne,

Thank you so much for the comparison. That was really great of you to do.

IMHO, the DPA sounds a little airier. But I'm not at all convinced that actually means sounding like a boom mike. It's pretty amazing how similar they do sound.

BTW, I've also heard very good things about Senn's MKE Platinum. Not asking for you to go through the work of another comparison, just wondering if you have an opinion of them.

Thanks.

I haven't used the MKE Platinum, so I can't give you an opinion of one.
