Wireless Boom - Would This Work?
 

We are gearing up (no pun intended) to shoot a documentary out of the country over the summer. We will plan to keep our boom mic wired to our camcorder as often as we can, but there will be times when a wireless boom will be extremely helpful. Please let me know if the following would work for a wireless boom solution.

Can we use an XLR to 3.5mm adapter cable to go out from our field mixer into our wireless transmitter, then pick-up the audio into the camera from the attached receiver?

This is the equipment we will have. This is donated, and there is no budget to add to it (except for the few bucks for the XLR to 3.55mm cable). I would try it myself, but I wont have the equipment for a while:
-Sennheiser Evolution G2 100 Series
-Sennheiser MKH416 shotgun
-Boompole
-Sound Devices 302 mixer

I just shot a musical in a theatre and did something similar,i connected my sennheiser G2 transmitter into the output from the sound desk,then had the receiver on the cam to supply the audio. Is this the type of set-up you mean ?
I had an XLR to phono lead,into a phono to 3.5mm adaptor,which plugged into the transmitter.

The whole lead cast were on their own wireless lavs and i still had perfect sound. Check out the sound on this link,kiss me kate.

I can't fault the Sennheiser set-up.

I believe the G2 system should have an included cable to connect the transmitter to an XLR output. Cool thing about the Sennheiser is it will take line input.

Cool, that sounds very similar to what I had in mind.

How far was your camera from the sound board?

My kit only cam with one XLR to 3.5mm jack,that's for connecting the receiver to the XLR input on the cam.

I shot on 2 night's from different locations,one night arond 20 metres away with a clear line of sight,
second night about 5 metres above,so transmitting up through a balcony floor through god nows how many wires and pipes etc,to where i was.
Make sure you only have 1 XLR plugged into the receiver,,,,the sound guy on my shoot plugged in 2 XLR's into the transmitter via a splitter lead and the receiver signal was jumping and peaking for no reason.

I've now bought myself a variety of my own connectors so if i come across this situation again,i can be in control of what plugs into where,etc.
