Speaker Hum

Hi,

I've got a chronic speaker hum in my left monitor and not in my right, man, it's driving me insane! Does anyone have any opinions on what it might be and how i might fix it?

The speakers are connected via RCA to my computer...

Cheers,

Tyler

Dear Tyler,

0. Are you speakers powered or unpowered ones?

If they are unpowered, then you do not have to plug your speakers into a power source, such as 110/220 volts, or a wall mounted power supply, just an audio source, such as your computer.

1. First ensure that your RCA cables, at the computer outputs are fully inserted.

If not, do so, then run a test.

2. The next step is to determine if the hum is present in your audio source, or in your speakers.

At your computer outputs, switch the left cable with the right cable, then run a test. The left channel plug may be white and the right would then be red.

If the hum switches to the other side, the problem is present in your source and it is not a problem with your speakers.

If the hum does not switch sides, then I would physically swap the speakers, if this is possible, using the existing wiring.

3. Do you have the speaker cables running along side of any power cables?

If so, reposition the cables so that they cross at 90 degree angles.

Please report back, then we will offer more suggestions.
