Sennheiser G2 and MixPre with phantom on?
Hi there,
Can anyone comment id I can use MixPre with phantom "ON" with Sennheiser G2 100 receiver output as the MixPre doesn't have the abaility to swich phantom per channel? I'll use shotgun and wireless to MixPre and wondering if it will work. Thanks, T |
Toenis, the Sennheiser manual says the receiver will "block" the phantom power. So it sounds to me that you will be ok. But I havenīt tried it yet, so maybe somebody who has can give us some insights...

I know that, at least for a short time, that the Sennhesier G2 receivers will not be damaged if they are subjected to +48 Volt Phantom Power.
I have never tried this for any length of time, other than a few seconds. But, if the manual says it will block phantom power, you are probably ok. I would call Sennheiser and Sound Devices. For example, if one channel is "blocked" what does it do to the phantom power supply in the MixPre? |
I've got a pile of Sennheiser receivers in a rack, They've been fine with phantom supplied all the time - in fact, I've only just thought about it and we plug and unplug these all the time, no problems found at all. Theory suggests that plugging and unplugging kit with +48V on is bad practice, but in reality, I forget more times than I remember. G2's are solid, professional kit and within reason, take a fair bit of abuse!

Hi Toenis!
I use the exact same setup; Mixpre + G2 + Rode NTG3 / Oktava 012, phantom power ON at mixpre, everything is fine and working as it should! I actually never even thought about it before seeing your question, wich is one I guess I ought have asked myself, but as I said, no damage to the Sennheisser... Magnus |
Don't know about the G2, but with Lectrosonic this is a big no-no. It causes a short, rapidly draining the mixer batteries and the whole mixer gets hot, like it's going to burn up.

There is no problem using the balanced out of an evolution G1 or G2 system into a mic. input with phantom power - they have blocking capacitors (please note that the very first G2s about 5 years ago had a problem, but only the first batch).
Please make sure you turn the output level down to avoid overloading the mic. input. But it *is* better to use a line level input instead. |
