Will this Work?
I have a Rode NTG-2 mic and I am filming a Cheerleader event this Sunday. (27 teams) Can anyone tell me if this is a good mic to use for this event? or should I just use the on-board mic? I will be using the Canon XL-2 or my Sony VX2100

Cheerleader event?????
You need a radio mic on each cheerleader and take your time to make sure that they are fitted correctly!!! To prevent you being arrested the NTG 2 will be fine or the camera mic, the advantage with the Ntg2 is that you may be able to get it closer to the action if mounted on a stand or boom. |
How large is the attending crowd? Is this indoor or outdoor? Personally I wouldn't use just one higher-sensitivity condenser mic. I'd always have a low-sensitivity dynamic omni or cardioid connected to the second recording channel. Then you can have your choice if the crowd creates too much signal from the condenser mic into the camera's mic input.
The camera's mic attenuation switch or an inline switchable attenuator can also be cheap insurance to use with the condenser mic if you don't already have a suitable dynamic mic. This is a situation where the AT804 or its updated replacement the AT8004 would be a good, inexpensive mic to have mounted on a stand (with appropriate wind protection if necessary). |
